What to see and do in Fort William and Lochaber

Fort William is regarded as The Outdoor Capital of the UK providing walking, climbing, cycling, boating, golf, fishing, steam trains and touring. Ben Nevis, Britain's highest mountain overlooks the town and has an annual race to the summit in September. The Highland Games and Gathering takes place in July. There's an excellent variety of shops and restaurants, perfect places to eat and most with evening entertainment of a Scottish nature. We will be happy to make recommendations.

An abundance of local attractions are within the Fortwilliam area and some of our favourites are compiled below. Try for yourself.

Walk up Ben Nevis or enjoy a day in the Glen Nevis area for short walks to scenic waterfalls.

Take a walk or bike ride along the Caledonian Canal embankment at Neptune's Staircase, unsurpassed views of the Ben Nevis Mountain range await.

Bike hire is plentiful and choose from lots of interesting forestry trails in the area, Aonach Mhor being purpose built and host to World Mountain biking events annually.

Consider a boat trip on Loch Linnhe on “Suitars Lass” to see all kinds of marine wildlife.

Follow the Road to the Isles to Glenfinnan and discover the history of the Jacobites - you can also take a boat cruise on Loch Shiel.

Listen to the lochaber Pipe Band or wind band playing in the High Street & Town Parade during the summer evenings.

Discover the secret of Whisky making at the Ben Nevis Distillery.

Visit our Mountain & Ski centre at Nevis Range, ride the Gondola to the mountain restaurant for unparalleled views.

Steam out along the West Highland line to Mallaig on "The Jacobite" Steam train.

A day trip to Loch Ness & the Monster museum, Inverness, Monarch of the Glen country and back to Fortwilliam.

Relax, enjoy the views, fresh air.

There are of course many interesting day trips by car around the West Highlands. Travel North through the Great Glen & onwards to the mystery of Famous Loch Ness. South to the natural wilderness of Historical Glen Coe or take the journey West along the “Road to the Isles” to the Ardnamurachan Penisula, Mallaig & the Small Isles,  or over the Sea to the Isle of Skye.

How much time do you have?
